What is a BMS, and what happens when it fails?

Every lithium battery has a small circuit board that guards it day and night. When your scooter suddenly dies or refuses to charge, this board is often the reason.

Quick answer

A BMS (battery management system) is the circuit board inside a lithium battery that prevents over-charging, over-discharging, over-current and overheating, and keeps the cells balanced. When it fails the scooter may cut out or refuse to charge, but it is often repairable without a new battery.

What the BMS does

BMS stands for battery management system. It watches every cell group and cuts the power before something harmful happens. India's AIS-156 standard requires the BMS on electric two-wheeler packs to give these protections.

  • Over-charge: stops charging when the cells are full.
  • Over-discharge: switches off before the cells are drained too far.
  • Over-current and short circuit: cuts out if the scooter draws too much current.
  • Temperature: stops charging or riding when the pack gets too hot.
  • Cell balance: keeps all cell groups at the same level, because the weakest group decides how far the whole pack goes.

Common signs of a BMS fault

  • The scooter switches off suddenly while the meter still shows charge, often on a slope or with a pillion.
  • The battery will not charge, or the charger shows full within minutes.
  • No power at all after the scooter stood unused for weeks.
  • Range drops sharply in a short time, often because cell groups have drifted apart.
  • The pack gets unusually warm, smells or makes noise. Stop using it and call us.

A BMS fault is often repairable

A BMS problem does not always mean a new battery. Depending on what we find, the board can be replaced, the cells rebalanced, or one weak cell group dealt with, and the rest of the pack keeps working. We test the pack first and tell you the cost before any work.

Please do not open a lithium pack yourself. The cells hold a lot of energy, and a slip can cause a short circuit or fire. If a battery is swollen, stop using and charging it, keep it away from heat and people, and call us.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my BMS is faulty?

Sudden cut-offs with charge left, a battery that will not charge, or no output after long parking are typical signs. Only a test of each cell group confirms it.

Can a BMS be replaced without changing the battery?

Often, yes, if the cells are still healthy. We check the cells before recommending it.

Does a lead-acid battery have a BMS?

Usually not. A BMS is standard on lithium-ion and LFP packs, where each cell group must be watched.

Why does my scooter battery stop working after standing for a month?

The cells may have drained low enough for the BMS to lock the output to protect them. It can often be recovered at the workshop; bring it in rather than forcing a charge.

Battery cutting out or not charging?

Bring the scooter and charger to Simada Naka for a free diagnosis, any brand. We repair BMS faults and balance cells, and tell you the cost before any work.
