Buying a used electric scooter: how to check the battery

The battery is the most expensive part of a used EV and the hardest to judge by eye. These checks take an hour and can save you from a bad buy.

Quick answer

Read the battery label and papers for age and type, ride from a full charge and compare range with the rated figure, watch for bars dropping on climbs, time a full charge, and look for swelling, cracks or BMS errors. Make sure the charger matches. A load test gives the surest answer.

Start with the label and the papers

  • Read the battery label: voltage, Ah, chemistry and serial number. Many packs also show a manufacture date. It should match the model's original spec.
  • Ask for the purchase invoice, battery warranty card and service record. A pack already replaced once should have its own bill.
  • Check the charger: same voltage and same chemistry as the pack. A wrong charger can have damaged it.

Do a real ride test

  • Ask the seller to charge it fully, then ride a set distance and see how many bars are left. Compare with the model's rated range.
  • Watch for voltage sag: if the bars or speed drop sharply on a flyover or with two riders, and jump back when you stop, the cells are weak.
  • Note any sudden cut-out or a battery or BMS error on the display. Both need a proper diagnosis.

Check charging and the case

  • Time a charge from low to full. If it fills much faster than the maker's figure, the pack holds less than it should.
  • Feel the pack and charger after charging. Warm is normal; too hot to touch, or a burning smell, is not.
  • Look for a bulging case, cracks, rusty terminals or water marks from monsoon water-logging.
  • A swollen battery is a safety risk: do not buy it, do not charge it, keep it away from heat and people, and never puncture or open it.

How we check used EVs before sale

Every used vehicle on our floor is checked and serviced before it goes on sale. We test battery capacity under load, cell balance and charging behaviour, and tell you honestly what condition the pack is in. If a pack is near its end, we replace it or price the vehicle for it.

Newer lithium packs were built to stricter safety tests: the AIS-156 battery rules for scooters took effect in phases from December 2022. Ask the seller when the vehicle was made.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a used electric scooter battery is good?

Ride it from a full charge and compare the range with the rated figure, watch for bars dropping on climbs, time a charge, and check the case for swelling. A load test at a battery shop gives the surest answer.

Can I get a used scooter's battery tested before I buy?

Yes. Our battery diagnosis is free. WhatsApp 99091 21112 before you bring the scooter so we can plan the time.

Is a used EV with an old battery worth buying?

It can be, if the price allows for a new battery soon. Find out what a replacement for that model will need before you agree on a price.

What does it mean if the battery bars drop fast on a climb?

That is voltage sag. Some dip is normal, but a big drop that recovers when you stop usually means weak or unbalanced cells.
