Original or local EV battery: what is the real difference?
Two packs can look the same from outside and carry the same 60V 30Ah label. What decides safety and life is hidden inside: the cells, the BMS and the testing behind them.
Quick answer
The difference is inside: cell quality, the BMS and safety testing. Packs on Indian e-two-wheelers must meet AIS-156, with a protective BMS, fuse and cells tested to IS 16893. A cheap ‘compatible’ pack may skip all of that, and can void the scooter's warranty.
Where cheap packs cut corners
- Cells: a sound pack uses matched new cells from a known maker. Some cheap packs mix grades, or use cells you cannot trace, and one weak cell drags down the whole pack.
- BMS: the cheapest boards may skip temperature sensors or cell balancing, which is exactly the protection you need in Surat's summer.
- Build: weak welds, thin wires, no fuse and poor sealing against water. These show up as faults or heat months later, often after the monsoon.
What Indian safety rules require
After the e-scooter fires of 2022, the road transport ministry tightened the battery standard AIS-156 for electric two-wheelers. Amendment III came into force in two phases, from 1 December 2022 and 31 March 2023.
- A BMS that protects against over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, short circuit and over-temperature.
- A pack-level fuse, protection against water, and a test showing that if one cell overheats, the fire does not spread to the rest.
- Cells tested to the Indian standard IS 16893 (Parts 2 and 3) in an NABL-accredited lab, and traceability of cells, BMS and pack.
Why it matters for a replacement pack
These approvals are given to the battery that came with your vehicle. A ‘compatible’ pack from an unknown workshop has usually not been through that testing, and nobody may stand behind it if it fails. Fitting a non-approved battery or charger can also end the manufacturer's warranty on the scooter: brands such as Ather exclude modified batteries, and TVS has said non-TVS chargers void cover.
Questions to ask any battery seller
- Which chemistry, which cell maker, and what voltage, Ah and kWh exactly?
- Does the BMS have temperature sensors and cell balancing, and what current is it rated for?
- Is there a test report or certificate for the cells or the pack?
- Is the warranty written on the bill, and who honours it?
- Does it come with, or work with, a charger made for that exact battery?
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Are local EV batteries safe?
Some are well built, many are not, and you cannot tell from outside. Ask about the cells, the BMS and any test report before you pay.
What is AIS-156 for EV batteries?
It is the Indian safety standard for electric two-wheeler battery packs. Since 2022–23 it requires a protective BMS, a fuse, water protection, cell testing to IS 16893 and a test that one overheating cell does not set off the rest.
Will a non-original battery void my scooter warranty?
It can. Many makers exclude modified batteries and non-approved chargers. If your scooter is still under warranty, check the warranty booklet first.
