Lithium vs lead-acid: which battery should you buy?
The cheapest battery to buy is rarely the cheapest to own. Here is how the three chemistries we sell compare, in plain numbers.
Quick answer
For daily running of 40 km or more, an LFP lithium battery is usually the best buy: it lasts 2,000–4,000 charge cycles and copes best with heat. Lead-acid is cheapest upfront but lasts only a few hundred cycles; lithium-ion (NMC) is lightest, at 1,000–2,000 cycles.
The three chemistries side by side
| Battery | Upfront cost | Charge cycles | Weight | Heat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lead-acid | Lowest | A few hundred | Heaviest | Ages faster in heat |
| Lithium-ion (NMC) | Highest | 1,000–2,000 | Lightest | Sensitive to heat |
| LFP (lithium iron phosphate) | Medium | 2,000–4,000 | Light | Best in heat |
Cycle figures are typical manufacturer ratings; real life depends on charging habits and heat.
Which one should you choose?
- Short daily trips and a tight budget: lead-acid still makes sense, as long as you accept replacing it sooner.
- Daily running of 40 km or more: LFP usually costs least per kilometre over its life, and it copes best with a Surat summer.
- Need the most range from the lightest pack: lithium-ion (NMC).
- Upgrading lead-acid to lithium is often possible, but the charger — and sometimes the controller — must match. We check compatibility before we quote.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Which battery lasts longest?
LFP. It is typically rated for 2,000–4,000 charge cycles, against 1,000–2,000 for lithium-ion (NMC) and a few hundred for lead-acid.
Can I put a lithium battery in my old scooter?
Usually yes, in the same voltage (48V, 60V or 72V), with a matching charger. Bring the scooter in and we will check it for free.
Not sure which battery you need?
Tell us the vehicle and roughly how far you ride each day. The advice costs nothing, whatever brand your scooter is.
