LFP vs NMC: which lithium battery handles Surat's heat better?
Both are lithium, but they behave differently when the battery gets hot. In a city where summer afternoons can cross 40 °C, that difference matters.
Quick answer
LFP handles heat better. Its cells are more thermally stable and, in tests, reach thermal runaway later and less violently than NMC; they are also rated for more charge cycles. NMC is lighter and stores more energy per kilo, but needs more care in a Surat summer.
Two lithium chemistries, two personalities
NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) packs as much energy as possible into a small, light cell. LFP (lithium iron phosphate, also written LiFePO4) gives up some of that energy in return for a more stable chemistry. Our lithium vs lead-acid guide compares both with lead-acid on cost and cycles; this page goes deeper into heat and safety.
LFP and NMC compared
| Point | LFP | NMC |
|---|---|---|
| Cell voltage | 3.2V | 3.6–3.7V |
| Energy per kg of cell | 90–130 Wh/kg | 190–260 Wh/kg |
| Pack weight for the same kWh | Heavier and bulkier | Lighter and smaller |
| Thermal stability | Higher: reaches thermal runaway later and less violently | Lower: needs tighter temperature control |
| Typical rated cycle life | 2,000–4,000 | 1,000–2,000 |
Energy-density and thermal figures are cell-level test data from the French research institute CEA-Liten; individual cells vary by maker and design.
What heat does to a lithium battery
Heat speeds up the slow chemical wear inside every lithium cell, so a pack that is often hot loses capacity sooner. In a fault, such as a crushed or badly charged cell, heat can build up into thermal runaway: the cell heats itself faster than it can cool, and may vent or catch fire.
Research by CEA-Liten found that the higher a cell's energy density, the lower its thermal stability, and that LFP cells reach thermal runaway later and less violently than NMC cells. LFP is not fireproof, but it gives more margin on a hot day.
Okaya uses LFP across its range

| Okaya Faast F2B | 2.2 kWh LFP | 81 km |
| Okaya FEV 650 | 4.4 kWh LFP | 198 km |
| Okaya Faast F4 | 4.4 kWh LFP | 162 km |

Which one should a Surat rider pick?
- Daily riding, parking in the sun, a long working life: LFP is the safer, longer-lasting choice.
- Light scooter, small battery box, most range per kilo: NMC, with extra care to keep it cool.
- Switching chemistry needs a charger made for the new one, because LFP and NMC charge to different voltages.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is LFP safer than NMC?
At the chemistry level, yes: LFP cells are more thermally stable and react less violently in a fault. A good BMS and careful charging still matter for both.
Why is an LFP battery heavier?
Each kilo of LFP cell stores less energy than NMC, so a pack with the same kWh needs more cell weight and more space.
Does Okaya use LFP batteries?
Yes. The Okaya models we list with battery details all use LFP packs.
Can I replace my NMC battery with LFP?
Often, if an LFP pack of the right voltage fits the space and you use an LFP charger. Bring the scooter and we will check.
