EV battery warranty explained: what is covered and what voids it
A battery warranty is only as good as its small print. Here is what most of them cover, what they leave out, and how to keep your claim safe.
Quick answer
Most EV battery warranties cover manufacturing defects and capacity falling below a stated level, often 70 %, within a set number of years or km. Water damage, wrong chargers, tampering and accidents usually void them. Terms differ by manufacturer, so keep the bill and warranty card.
Terms differ by manufacturer
There is no single EV battery warranty in India; each brand writes its own. As examples, Autocar India reported a 3-year, unlimited-km warranty from Ather and 3 years or 50,000 km on the TVS iQube, and Ather sells an optional plan promising at least 70 % battery health for up to 8 years or 80,000 km. Your booklet is the only document that counts for your battery.
What a battery warranty usually covers
- Manufacturing defects: a dead cell, a failed BMS or a pack that stops working through no fault of yours.
- Capacity loss beyond a stated level within the period, often written as a percentage of health such as 70 %. Normal, gradual ageing above that level is not a defect.
- Limits of years or kilometres, whichever comes first. Some warranties are pro-rata, paying less as the battery gets older.
What usually voids it
- Water damage, for example riding through a flooded road or leaving the scooter standing in water.
- A wrong or non-approved charger.
- Opening the pack, changing cells or the BMS, or any other tampering by an unauthorised person.
- Accidents, fire, theft and physical damage such as a cracked case.
- Neglect, such as a pack left fully drained for months. Some brands treat this differently, so read your terms.
Keep your papers and how a claim works
Keep the original bill, the warranty card and the battery serial number together, with service records if you have them. A claim usually starts at the dealer: the pack is inspected and tested, the result goes to the manufacturer, and they decide on repair or replacement. Ask for a written job card when you hand the battery over.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What does a 70 % battery health warranty mean?
If the pack can hold less than 70 % of its original capacity within the warranty period, it qualifies for a claim under that brand's terms.
Does water damage void an EV battery warranty?
Very often, yes. Flooding is a common exclusion, so avoid deep water-logging in the monsoon.
Is the warranty valid without the bill?
Usually the bill or warranty card is needed to prove the purchase date. Keep a photo of both on your phone as a backup.
