What decides the cost of a new scooter battery?

Two batteries that both say 60V can differ a lot in price. Here is what you are really paying for, so you can compare quotes fairly.

Quick answer

The price of a new scooter battery depends mainly on its chemistry and its capacity in kWh (volts times Ah). Cell quality, the BMS, the warranty and any charger or fitting changes add to it. If only one cell or the BMS has failed, a repair can cost far less.

The seven things that set the price

  • Chemistry: lead-acid costs least to buy, LFP sits in the middle, lithium-ion (NMC) usually costs most.
  • Capacity in kWh: volts times Ah, divided by 1,000. A 60V 30Ah pack holds 1.8 kWh; more kWh means more cells, more range and a higher price.
  • Voltage: a 72V pack has more cells in series than a 48V pack of the same Ah, so it costs more. It must match your scooter.
  • Cell brand and grade: new, tested, matched cells cost more than unknown or recycled ones, and last longer.
  • The BMS: a good battery management system with enough current rating and cell balancing adds cost, and protects the cells.
  • Warranty: a longer written warranty is usually priced in. Compare the months and what is covered, not only the price.
  • Fitting and extras: switching from lead-acid to lithium needs a matching charger, sometimes a new connector, tray or controller setting.

What the industry figures say

BloombergNEF's 2025 survey put the global average lithium-ion pack price at 108 US dollars per kWh, with LFP packs at about 81 and NMC packs at about 128. These are large-volume figures, mostly for cars and power storage. A small replacement pack for one scooter costs more per kWh, because the BMS, casing, testing, transport and taxes are shared over far fewer cells.

So compare quotes per kWh and per year of warranty, not per battery. A cheap pack with fewer kWh or unknown cells is often the expensive choice.

Is a repair an option?

Sometimes. If one cell or the BMS has failed and the rest of a lithium pack tests healthy, replacing that part or balancing the cells can cost much less than a new pack. If many cells are weak, a new pack is the honest answer. We test first, free of charge, and show you the reading.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the kWh of my scooter battery?

Multiply the voltage by the Ah on the battery label and divide by 1,000. For example, 48V 24Ah is about 1.15 kWh and 72V 40Ah is 2.88 kWh.

Why is a lithium battery quote higher than lead-acid?

The cells and the BMS cost more, and a switch may need a new charger. Over its life lithium usually lasts many more charge cycles, so the cost per kilometre can be lower.

Can I put a bigger Ah battery in my scooter?

Often yes, at the same voltage, if it fits the space and the BMS suits your controller. More Ah gives more range. We check the fit before we quote.

Does battery warranty matter when comparing prices?

Yes. Ask for the warranty in writing, how many months it runs and whether it covers capacity loss or only a dead pack.
