Monsoon and water-logging: protect your EV battery
Rain is not a problem for a well-built electric scooter. Standing water up to the floorboard is. Here is what the waterproof ratings really promise, and what to do if you got caught.
Quick answer
IP67 means a part survived up to 1 m of still water for 30 minutes in a lab, not that the whole scooter can wade through floods. After deep water, do not charge straight away: switch off, let it dry fully, and get it checked if it shows any fault.
What the IP numbers mean
| Rating | Dust | Water |
|---|---|---|
| IP65 | Dust-tight | Low-pressure water jets from any side |
| IP66 | Dust-tight, fully | Strong water jets, like a hose |
| IP67 | Dust-tight, sealed | Short immersion: up to 1 m for 30 minutes in a lab test |
Ratings follow the international standard IEC 60529. The test uses a new, sealed unit in clean, still water — not a five-year-old scooter in muddy flood water.
Why deep water is still risky
The battery pack may be sealed, but the scooter is more than the pack. Since 2023 the Indian battery standard AIS-156 has required packs in registered electric two-wheelers to pass a water-immersion test, yet the motor, controller, wiring connectors and charging port are separate parts with their own seals.
- Seals age with heat and vibration, so an old scooter is less protected than a new one.
- Flood water is dirty and moving, and waves from other vehicles push it higher.
- Water left in connectors causes corrosion and faults that can appear weeks later.
- Many low-speed scooters and lead-acid packs are only splash-resistant.
After the scooter went through water
- Do not charge it straight away. Wait until it is fully dry, ideally a day.
- Switch it off and park it in a dry, airy place, raised if your street floods.
- If the battery is removable, wipe the case and look at the terminals. Do not open the pack.
- Bring it to us if it will not start, cuts out, shows an error, or the charger will not charge.
Surat streets in the rains
Low-lying roads and underpasses in Surat can fill quickly after heavy rain. If you cannot see the road surface, take another route or wait. Our EV battery care guide has the everyday monsoon habits; this page is about the deep-water day.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I ride an electric scooter in rain?
Yes, normal rain is fine for most models. Avoid standing water deeper than the floorboard and do not charge in the rain.
Does IP67 mean my scooter is waterproof?
No. IP67 means the tested part survived up to 1 m of still water for 30 minutes in a lab. It usually applies to the battery or motor, not the whole scooter.
How long should I wait before charging a wet scooter?
Until the charging port, connectors and battery case are completely dry — often a day. If it still shows a fault, do not charge; call service.
Is water damage covered by warranty?
It depends on the maker’s warranty terms for your model. Ask us on WhatsApp 99091 21112 and we will check.
Scooter went through water?
Do not charge it yet. Call 99091 21102 and bring it in — diagnosis is free, for any brand.
