What does an electric scooter cost per km in Surat?
Electricity is only part of the answer. Here is how to work out your own figure from your bill, and why the battery itself is the bigger cost.
Quick answer
A full charge takes about the battery size in kWh plus 15 % from the wall. With home power at an assumed Rs 8 per unit all-in, a 2 kWh scooter costs about Rs 18 per charge, roughly 26 paise per km at 70 km. Battery wear adds more, especially with lead-acid.
Step 1: units per full charge
One unit on your bill is one kWh. Find your battery size: volts times Ah, divided by 1,000. A 60V 33Ah pack is about 2 kWh. The charger and the battery lose some energy as heat, so the meter counts more than the battery stores. For simple maths add about 15 %: a 2 kWh pack takes about 2.3 units from empty to full, a 4 kWh pack about 4.6 units.
Step 2: your price per unit in Surat
Surat city is supplied by Torrent Power; many outskirts and villages around Surat by DGVCL. The rates set by GERC for homes from 1 April 2026 are:
- Torrent Power Surat (RGP): Rs 3.20 per unit for the first 50 units, Rs 3.65 for the next 50, Rs 4.25 for the next 150 and Rs 5.05 above 250 units a month.
- DGVCL (RGP, non-rural): Rs 3.05, Rs 3.50, Rs 4.15 and Rs 5.20 per unit for the same slabs; rural homes pay less.
- On top come a fuel surcharge and electricity duty. For DGVCL the fuel surcharge (FPPAS) has been Rs 2.45 per unit plus 3.99 % since July 2026. Torrent sets its own, and it changes from time to time.
- Easiest way to get your real figure: divide the total of your last bill by the units on it.
Worked example
| Battery | Units per full charge | Cost per charge at Rs 8 | Example range | Electricity per km |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 kWh | 2.3 | Rs 18.40 | 70 km | about 26 paise |
| 4 kWh | 4.6 | Rs 36.80 | 130 km | about 28 paise |
Rs 8 per unit is an assumed round figure for a home bill including fuel surcharge and duty; the ranges are examples. At Rs 5 per unit the same packs cost about 16 and 18 paise per km.
The hidden cost: battery wear
Every battery wears out and must be replaced. Spread its price over the kilometres it lasts. Typical ratings are a few hundred full cycles for lead-acid, 1,000–2,000 for lithium-ion (NMC) and 2,000–4,000 for LFP. At 70 km per charge, 400 cycles is about 28,000 km, while 2,000 cycles is about 140,000 km.
So every Rs 10,000 of battery price adds about 36 paise per km over 28,000 km, but only about 7 paise over 140,000 km. For lead-acid the battery often costs more per km than the electricity. Cycle figures are typical manufacturer ratings; heat and charging habits change real life.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How many units does an electric scooter take for a full charge?
Roughly the battery size in kWh plus about 15 % for losses. A 2 kWh battery takes about 2.3 units from empty; a top-up from 20 % takes less.
What is the electricity rate per unit in Surat?
For Torrent Power homes the energy charge is Rs 3.20 to Rs 5.05 per unit depending on monthly use, from 1 April 2026. Fuel surcharge and duty come on top, so check your own bill.
Does charging a scooter at home raise my bill slab?
It can. Riding 40 km a day with a 2 kWh, 70 km pack adds roughly 40 units a month, which may push the last units into a higher slab.
Which battery is cheapest per km over its life?
For daily riders, usually LFP, because its higher cycle rating spreads the price over far more kilometres than lead-acid.
