Range dropped? Check these six things first

A shorter range does not always mean a dead battery. Much of what we see in the workshop is cheaper to fix than a new pack.

Quick answer

A drop in range is often not the battery. Check tyre pressure, dragging brakes and the charger first; a single weak cell or BMS fault can also be repaired. Replace the battery only when a capacity test shows it is well below its rating.

The six usual causes

  • Low tyre pressure — the cheapest fix of all. Check it every week.
  • Brakes dragging — a binding brake quietly eats range on every trip.
  • A faulty charger that never fills the battery to 100 %.
  • One weak cell or a BMS fault dragging the whole pack down — often repairable.
  • Extra load, a pillion rider or a lot of full-throttle riding.
  • Normal ageing — every battery loses some capacity each year, faster in heat.

When it really is the battery

If the tyres, brakes and charger are fine and the pack tests well below its rated capacity, replacement is the honest answer. We test first and show you the reading before suggesting a new battery.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my battery needs replacing?

Only a capacity test tells you for sure. Range loss alone can come from tyres, brakes or the charger. Our diagnosis is free.

Can a weak battery be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes — when one cell or the BMS is at fault rather than the whole pack.
