What does Ah mean, and how does battery capacity change range?

Ah is the number most sellers quote, but on its own it does not tell you how far you will ride. Here is the simple sum that does.

Quick answer

Ah is how much current a battery holds; on its own it does not set range. Multiply volts by Ah to get watt-hours: a 60V 30Ah pack stores 1,800 Wh, or 1.8 kWh. On the same scooter, more kWh means roughly proportionally more range.

Ah is only half the story

Ah (ampere-hours) says how much current a battery can supply for how long. A 30Ah battery can, in theory, give 30 amps for one hour or 10 amps for three hours.

The energy stored, which is what decides range, is volts multiplied by Ah. The result is in watt-hours (Wh); 1,000 Wh is 1 kWh, or one unit of electricity.

Worked example: same Ah, different energy

BatterySumEnergy
48V 30Ah48 × 301,440 Wh = 1.44 kWh
60V 30Ah60 × 301,800 Wh = 1.8 kWh
72V 30Ah72 × 302,160 Wh = 2.16 kWh
60V 40Ah60 × 402,400 Wh = 2.4 kWh

All four are sold as 30Ah or 40Ah, yet the 72V 30Ah pack holds 50 % more energy than the 48V one. Compare Wh or kWh, not Ah.

How capacity turns into range

On the same scooter, range rises roughly in step with kWh. Okaya's own figures show it: the Okaya Faast F2B with 2.2 kWh is rated for 81 km, and the Okaya Faast F4 with 4.4 kWh for 162 km. Double the energy, about double the rated range.

Real range is lower than the rated figure: a pillion, full throttle, low tyres and Surat traffic all use more energy per kilometre, and every battery holds a little less each year.

Why a bigger battery may not be a simple swap

  • Space: more Ah means more cells, and the pack may not fit the battery box under the seat or floor.
  • Voltage must stay the same. Extra range should come from more Ah at the same voltage, not from a higher-voltage pack.
  • Charging time grows. A rough guide is Ah divided by the charger's amps, plus a little extra: a 40Ah pack on a 5A charger needs well over eight hours. A faster charger must still suit the battery.
  • Changing chemistry, for example lead-acid to lithium, always needs a matching charger.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a higher Ah battery better?

At the same voltage, yes: more Ah means more energy and more range. It is also heavier, bigger and slower to charge.

How many km will a 60V 30Ah battery give?

It stores about 1.8 kWh. The distance depends on the scooter, load and speed, so compare it with your scooter's rated range for its original pack.

Can I increase my scooter's range with a bigger battery?

Often, if a higher-Ah pack of the same voltage fits the space and the charger suits it. We check the box size and wiring before suggesting one.
